When encountering a bear:
– Show respect
– Do not approach
– The only thing predictable about bears is that they're unpredictable
– Give a bear plenty of room; don't run or make abrupt moves or noises that might cause it to startle
– If you encounter a bear in your path, take a different route or wait until the bear moves on
– Be incredibly wary of females with cubs or bears defending a carcass
– Report sightings to park rangers
When hiking in bear country:
– Make your presence known and do not surprise
– Wear bells, whistle, talk or sing loudly
– Hike in groups
When camping:
– Do not camp where there's obvious bear activity, such as digging, tracks or scat
– Keep sleeping gear clean and free of food odors
– Sleep at least 100 yards from your cooking area
– Seal all food, clothes with food odors, toothpaste, perfume, and other strongly scented products and hang at least 10 feet off the ground and at least 4 feet horizontally away from any post or tree trunk. Many camping areas are set up to help you hang your food safely
